#CarbonSpark — A Calgary Kindness initiative.

Be the spark. Pass it on.

Carbon Spark is a community initiative we started at Carbon Psychology to do something simple: put more kindness into Calgary.

We print cards. You do something kind. You pass the card on. The next person does the same. That's it.

Kindness, it turns out, is one of the most accessible mental health tools we have. And it works for everyone involved — the giver, the receiver, and anyone watching it happen.

This started before it had a name.

Before Carbon Spark was Carbon Spark, it was just Katrina tucking Starbucks gift cards under windshield wipers with handwritten notes. Just the feeling that Calgary could use a little more love, and humans could use a little more hope that there are still lots of good happening in the world.

One day someone found a card and commented: "This was so sweet — not only did you make my day, you made it a special day for my three kiddos too. I took them to Starbucks after school for their favourite cake pops and pink drinks. You have been the talk of our entire evening. Calgary is truly blessed."

That was the moment it became something.

Carbon Spark is what happens when a therapy practice decides that mental health doesn't stop at the therapy room door. We see every day how much isolation and disconnection affect people. Kindness is one of the simplest, most accessible antidotes we have.

We print the cards and start the spark. You keep the movement growing.

Bringing the love back to YYC, one card at a time.

The Science of Kindness

It makes you happier. Studies show acts of kindness create a positive feedback loop — the more you give, the better you feel, and the more you want to give again. (Aknin, Dunn, & Norton, 2012)

It reduces depression. A systematic review of over 20 studies found that performing acts of kindness significantly improves the mental wellbeing of the person doing them. (Curry et al., 2018)

It reduces loneliness. Randomized trials show that regular kind acts lower social isolation and increase feelings of belonging. (Layous et al., 2012)

It lowers stress and supports heart health. Kindness releases oxytocin, which reduces blood pressure and cortisol. (Harvard Health Publishing)

It triggers your brain's feel-good chemistry. Serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin — the same neurochemicals involved in mood, pleasure, and connection — are all activated by kind acts. (Mayo Clinic).

Kindness isn't just a nice idea. It changes your brain chemistry and your mental health.

FAQ

  • What is Carbon Spark?

Carbon Spark is a community kindness initiative started by Carbon Psychology, a group therapy practice in Calgary. We print cards that get passed along with acts of kindness — the idea being that one kind act leads to the next, and the card keeps moving through the community.

  • How do I get a Carbon Spark card?

Cards appear around Calgary — on windshields, in cafés, tucked into library books. If you find one, you've been sparked. If you want to hand them out yourself, reach out through our contact page and we'll get some to you.

  • Why did Carbon Psychology start Carbon Spark?

We're a therapy practice. We spend our days with people working through anxiety, trauma, grief, and burnout — and we see how much isolation makes all of it harder. Carbon Spark is a way to contribute to Calgary's mental health outside the therapy room, by making small moments of connection more common.

  • Does kindness really improve mental health?

Yes. Research shows that acts of kindness reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, lower stress, increase life satisfaction, and trigger the release of serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin — the neurochemicals behind mood, pleasure, and connection. It benefits the giver, the receiver, and even people who witness it.

  • What should I do if I find a Carbon Spark card?

Take the moment in. Whatever the kind act was — a coffee, a note, groceries, a parking meter filled up — let it land. That's the point.

Do something kind for someone else. Big or small. Follow your gut. The card goes with whatever feels right to you.

Pass the card on. Keep it moving.

  • What counts as an act of kindness?

Anything. Buy a stranger a coffee. Leave groceries on a neighbour's doorstep. Hold a door. Send a "thinking of you" text. Pay someone's parking. The scale doesn't matter — the intention does.

  • Is Carbon Spark the same as therapy?

No. Carbon Spark is a community initiative, not a mental health service. If you're looking for therapy in Calgary, you can learn more about our team and the services we offer.

  • Can my business or organization partner with Carbon Spark?

Yes. We collaborate with Calgary businesses, schools, and nonprofits on kindness campaigns, mental health workshops, and community events. Reach out through our contact form below to talk.
