Psychological Assessments

General overview and information about assessments offered at Carbon Psychology.

What is a Psychological Assessment?

Psychological assessments are structured evaluations used to better understand cognitive functioning, learning, attention, and emotional or behavioural patterns.

They are often used to clarify diagnoses, support academic or workplace accommodations, and guide next steps in treatment or support.

When Do People Seek an Assessment?

Assessments are commonly requested when there are questions about:

learning or academic performance

  • attention, focus, or ADHD

  • cognitive strengths and challenges

  • behavioural or emotional functioning

  • diagnostic clarification

Assessment Types

  • A person wearing a denim jacket and white shirt holding books and a pink notebook, carrying a grey backpack, with colorful ladybug patches on their shirt, standing outdoors on a concrete surface.

    Psychoeducational

Psychoeducational assessments provide a detailed understanding of how someone learns — including cognitive ability, academic skills, and information processing. They help identify learning strengths and challenges, and are commonly used to support school planning, accommodations, and admissions decisions. These assessments are typically completed for children and adolescents (Kindergarten through Grade 12), and in some cases, adults.

  • A child with short hair holding a red paper heart on a wooden floor, viewed from above.

    Autism (ASD)

Autism (ASD) assessments provide a structured evaluation of social communication, behavioural patterns, and developmental history. They help determine whether someone meets criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder and offer guidance for supports, accommodations, and next steps. These assessments are typically completed from around age 3 onward, and can also be conducted for adolescents and adults.

  • A young person with curly blond hair, wearing a grey hoodie, looking at their phone with a focused expression, sitting on a couch with a background of green trees outside a window.

    ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects how someone regulates attention, impulses, and behaviour. It often shows up as difficulty with focus, organization, follow-through, and managing distractions. While it’s commonly identified in childhood, these patterns frequently continue into adolescence and adulthood. ADHD assessments can be completed for children, adolescents, and adults.

    Gifted + School Admissions

Some private schools in Calgary, including Rundle Academy, Webber Academy, Calgary Academy, and Foothills Academy, may require a psychoeducational or gifted assessment as part of the admissions process. We provide comprehensive assessments and reports that meet school requirements and can be submitted with your application.

  • A young boy with blond hair stacking colorful foam blocks with letters and images, some sitting on a table and some stacked in front of him.

    Cognitive

A cognitive assessment evaluates how someone thinks and processes information — including areas such as reasoning, memory, attention, and processing speed. It helps identify cognitive strengths and challenges, and how these impact day-to-day functioning, learning, and problem-solving. In some cases, nonverbal measures may be used to assess cognitive functioning without relying heavily on language. This can be useful for those with English as a second language.

  • Three young women smiling and laughing together outdoors, one holding an umbrella, with warm sunlight illuminating their faces and clothing.

    Mental Health & Diagnostic

A mental health assessment provides a structured evaluation of emotional and psychological functioning — including mood, coping patterns, behaviour, and overall functioning. It is used to support diagnostic clarification (such as anxiety, depression, or related concerns) and to guide treatment recommendations and next steps.

What the Process Looks Like:

  • Initial consultation
We gather background information and clarify what you’re hoping to understand.

  • Testing sessions
Structured testing is completed over several hours. This may take place across one or more appointments.

  • Scoring and interpretation
Results are carefully reviewed and interpreted.

  • Feedback session
You’ll receive a detailed explanation of the results, along with recommendations.

FAQ

  • How long does a psychological assessment take?

Assessments typically involve several hours of testing, along with time for scoring and a feedback session. They are completed over multiple steps, not in a single appointment.

  • Do I need a referral for an assessment?

A referral from a doctor is not required. You can book a consultation directly to discuss your needs.

  • Can I be diagnosed in one session?

No. A proper assessment requires time to gather information, complete testing, and interpret results accurately. This process cannot be done in one hour.

  • How do I know which assessment I need?

This can be discussed during your consultation. We’ll help determine whether a psychoeducational, ADHD, or autism assessment is the best fit.

  • Are assessments covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans will cover psychological assessments, however coverage varies, so it’s best to check with your provider.

  • What if I’m not sure I need a full assessment?

A consultation can help clarify whether an assessment is appropriate, or if another type of support may be more helpful.
